The fact that Excel Christian's Seth Sutton is going to be an athlete in college is not a surprise.
But what is surprising even to the senior is that the All-Bartow County first-team basketball player is going to play college football at Division I-A Troy State.
Despite having never played a down of organized football, the 6-foot-6, 285-pound basketball player, who averaged 15.5 points per game and 9.1 rebounds, will play his first-ever football game at the college level with an up-and-coming Trojans program that went 6-6 with losses to nationally ranked Nebraska, Kansas State and Minnesota.
"I've never played football in my life but I have always been very interested," said Sutton, who added the temptation to leave Excel to play football existed. "I can't count how many coaches I have had ask me to go to a different school and play football for them, but I chose to stay at Excel for the academics and the great atmosphere."
Having been at the private school since he was in the second grade, Sutton elected to remain at Excel but the dream of playing football still burned.
"I chose to keep my ties to this school and trusting that if I kept working and kept believing that I would be able to one day pursue my aspirations of being a football player even though I chose to stay at this school."
Sutton had received several basketball scholarship offers from Division II and smaller schools.
But when the idea of playing football arose Sutton, who has been blessed with a linemen's body and the hands and catching ability of a wide receiver, jumped at the opportunity.
Sutton got the idea of playing football at the next level from his brother Silas, a graduate of Excel who signed a golf scholarship with Wallace (Ala.) State last year.
Sutton decided to pursue his dream of playing football and, with the help of Excel boys basketball coach and athletic director Tony Jones, began contacting schools.
Jones made a tape of Sutton playing basketball and working out.
Despite not having any playing experience, schools were intrigued by his size, athletic prowess and strong moral character.
He garnered interest from Auburn and Tennessee and smaller schools like Costal Carolina, Jacksonville State and Maryville (Tenn.) College, but Troy State gave Sutton the best offer.
"I like the way the program looks and how they are on the rise," added Sutton whose future seems to be as a tight end. "I imagine the transition from a small private basketball team to playing in front of a Division I football crowd at a stadium such as a Nebraska or Georgia is going to be a shock. But as I get used to the program and keep my focus, I imagine everything should come together."
Sutton will head to Troy State in the summer and start working out with the team. He is one of two tight end in this year's recruiting class and expects to be redshirted in the fall.
The other Trojan tight ends, who did not have a reception this season, are seniors Garrett Anderson and Joe Munson and junior Rob Austin.
Although he expects to be a member of the practice squad next fall, Sutton is eying Sept. 3, 2005 when the Trojans open the season playing host to Iowa State.
Until then, Sutton will be working out and becoming a student of the game he has never played but admired from afar.
"Right now I am working out with the basketball team close to 15 hours a week to get my endurance up, and right now there's just a lot of studying the game of football" said Sutton, who can squat more than 500 pounds. "I'm really hoping to be ahead of the schedule when I get to Troy."
Although he is constantly working out and studying the game, it won't prepare him for the physical punishment he will endure in practice.
"I've taken some hard hits in basketball, but I don't know if there is anything that will really prepare me for Division I, full-contact football," Sutton said. "It's just going to be one of those things I am going to have to get accustomed to."

I really would like to know why this kids BIO put out by Troy says the kid played Offensive line. While Seth says to the paper at the same time he never has played a down of football. This is probably some of the same reason the Offensive line has some of the problems we seen last Saturday Night.
The hits for Mark Fleetwood just keep on rolling in.
